The Extraction Method Makes a HUGE Difference

April 23, 2021

CBD Extraction Verdania Fields

You need to know more than just where your CBD comes from; you need to know how it’s processed.

The type of extraction method is important because some methods compromise healing potential by eliminating many of the beneficial compounds, while others can leave toxic solvents behind.

Verdania Fields’ cannabinoids (including CBD) are extracted using organic food-grade ethanol extraction – specifically organic sugar cane – to preserve the integrity of the multitude of beneficial compounds the cannabis plant has to offer, which dramatically increases its efficacy. (Most other ethanol extraction’s use Everclear, which is derived from GMO corn).

Other extraction methods, including the prevalent and inexpensive Co2, are not optimal because the plant’s constituents (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids etc.) are isolated and subsequently reconstituted, which preserves only a dozen compounds and therefore hinders its therapeutic applications. Though Co2 products are marked as “full spectrum,” they only contain a fraction of the spectrum.

In contrast, Verdania Fields’ formulas contain nearly 500+ compounds. In fact, research confirms our products are 4x more potent than Isolate CBD or Co2 extraction.

ECS System Chart Verdania Fields

When our body is in balance, or as it is referred to in the medical field, homeostasis, we tend to feel good, physically and emotionally. There are many variables which can cause our body to be out of balance, such as stress, insomnia or exposure to environmental toxins.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) helps the body maintain homeostasis through its three main components: “messenger” molecules called cannabinoids (e.g CBD), the receptors in the body that these molecules bind to, and the enzymes that break them down for the body to synthesize.

The ECS modulates the function of the brain and the central nervous, endocrine and immune systems, among others, and it is responsible for regulating virtually every physiological process in the body including immune response, mood, or communication between cells.

Cannabinoids, such as CBD, act as agonists that bind to ECS receptors to instigate biological responses and modulate important bodily functions that determine how an individual moves, reacts, and feels. As a result, the ECS can alleviate an assortment of conditions, including pain, memory loss, migraines and seizures, among many others. Research has concluded an underlying clinical endocannabinoid deficiency may be the root cause of conditions including chronic migraines, fibromyalgia, and irritable bowel syndrome.

The therapeutic applications of cannabinoids stem from their ability to positively interact with the body’s ECS, which has two primary receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are widely distributed in the central nervous system, peripheral organs and tissues. These receptors are also located in the brain stem which is responsible for involuntary actions of the body (including breathing and circulating blood) and regulating activities of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems – something of utmost consequence with COVID-19. In addition, they impede infections that inhibit respiratory functioning by acting as a bronchodilator.

CB2 receptors, on the other hand, are located primarily in the immune system and are responsible for much of the anti-inflammatory effects of cannabis. Research shows modulating CB2 receptors may be the key in treating a plethora of illnesses that cause degradation in CB2 receptor expressions including gastrointestinal, liver, kidney, psychiatric, bone, skin, and lung disease, as well as various forms of cancer.

What does this all mean? Using CBD can help support the ECS by creating homeostasis so it can properly regulate your brain and body, along with your nervous and immune systems, to relieve stress, get a better night’s sleep, and enhance your cognitive facilities.

Flower Derived vs. Industrial Hemp

April 15, 2021

Verdania Fields Full Spectrum CBD Calming Forest

At Verdania Fields, we use whole plant, full spectrum CBD that is harvested from the cannabis flower.

The most potent spectrum of cannabinoids and synergistic components are found in formulations derived from cannabis flower, making it most effective in addressing health and wellness issues.

In addition to cannabinoids, such as CBD/CBDa, CBG and CBN, the flower encompasses the most robust variety of terpenes and flavonoids, along with phytonutrients, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.

Most CBD on the market, however, it’s made from industrial hemp because it is less expensive. It is defined as hemp that has been bred to grow tall, slender stocks to produce fiber for industrial uses, such as textiles.

Industrial hemp is sparse in flower, so one must source cannabinoids (such as CBD) from less optimal parts of the plant such as stalks, stems and leaves which offer little to no potency unlike full spectrum CBD.

Industrial hemp is also a bio accumulator that cleans soil, and therefore it can retain toxins.

The Secret to Lifting Brain Fog

February 26, 2021

Focus and lifting brain fog

So many people seem to be dealing with different degrees of brain fog. Perhaps it’s the endless distractions of working from home, an extra dose of anxiety because of COVID-19 or because we’re slowly going crazy stuck in our houses.

Brain fog can affect you in a number of ways

  • Memory problems
  • Inability to concentrate and its cousin–the ability to be easily distracted
  • Difficulty processing information and solving problems
  • Trouble finding words
  • A feeling of confusion or disorientation

Zoom fatigue

One thing we all share these days is Zoom Fatigue. Too much Zoom could make anyone foggy. Turns out we’re not only tired of non-stop Zoom calls but, according to a Stanford study, video conferencing forces our brains to work harder because they must interpret a constant flow of video input.

Jeremy Bailenson, founding director of the Virtual Human Interaction Lab at Stanford University, has spent two decades studying how virtual communication affects individuals and explains the effect this way, “Imagine in the physical workplace, for the entirety of an 8-hr workday, an assistant followed you around with a handheld mirror, and for every single task you did and every conversation you had, they made sure you could see your own face in that mirror.” You can see why we have Zoom burnout.

Other reasons for brain fog

Beyond zoom calls and the current state of the affairs in the world, there are many possible reasons for brain fog, some more serious than others:

  • Excessive anxiety and depression
  • Side effects of medication
  • Low B12
  • Exposure to toxic mold
  • Underactive thyroid
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Lyme

And unfortunately, there is a new addition to the list, COVID-19. Brain fog often occurs during the illness but can linger for people who “recover.”

If you’ve ruled out anything serious and are simply dealing with Brain Fog 2021, here’s what the experts recommend. Of course, it’s the usual suspects: Get more sleep. More exercise. And put away the junk food.

All these are important and should be part of your daily self-care. We have something new to add to your daily regimen. It’s our secret weapon. Focus Max. For us, it’s been pure love from the first time we sampled it and we’re so happy to be able to bring this new formula to you.

We’ve boosted the levels of CBD and CBG in Focus Max to enhance attention span, concentration and help reduce neuroinflammation, a common cause of brain fog and lack of focus. Best known as a neuroprotectant, CBG can help protect your brain’s function.

Research has also shown that CBG can stimulate the growth of new brain cells, even in older brains. We’ve added Mycrene to our Focus formula to facilitate its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

We’ve discovered that many people often suffer from brain fog in the morning. After you’ve had your morning coffee, take a dropperful before you start your work. Better yet, you can add it to your coffee or tea. We’ve found whole new levels of concentration. Work just flows. The formula is mentally stimulating without creating any jitters like some stimulants. Pure bliss!

As a side note, we’ve been told by a few of our customers that Focus has improved their golf and tennis games. Of course, they’re keeping this very hush-hush…

February 3, 2021

Everybody we know is under stress.

We’ve got LOTS of reasons to be stressed—the on-going Covid crisis, economic devastation, racial unrest and isolation from friends and family.

Election Stress Calming Rock Stack

No wonder anxiety, sleeplessness and the inability to concentrate are wreaking havoc on everyone’s lives. Here are some things you can do:

Election Stress Relief & Fixing Sleep Issues - Woman Relaxing in Hammock
  • Create a soothing play list
  • Don’t binge on news
  • Read a book to get your mind off it
  • Practice Deep Breathing

The simplest suggestion, deep breathing, is an easy one for everyone. It can immediately change your state of mind and your physical response to stress. Many studies of yogic breath show improved blood-pressure, heart rate and reduction of the stress hormone, cortisol.

Breathe In. Breathe Out.

Anxiety not only unsettles your emotional state, it also disturbs your concentration and makes it almost impossible to get a good night’s sleep. That’s why we recommend a systemic approach with 3 different tinctures: Anxiety Relief, Deep Sleep and Focus.

We’ve found when people used Deep Sleep but aren’t getting the results they should, that it’s an anxiety problem on top of a sleep problem. Nurse Betty recommends taking Anxiety Relief a half an hour before bed and then Deep Sleep at bedtime. This usually does the trick.

Given the widespread sleep issues everyone seems to be having at the moment, this inspired us to develop a maximum strength Sleep product. It’s currently in development but will be ready soon for all of you who need some extra help.

Starting a new business demands lots of hours and the need to focus on what really matters. We couldn’t survive without Focus.

“Life Changing! I had a full days’ worth of intentional energy, a much better “attitude” and most importantly…I could think REALLY clearly. It’s like someone put on the windshield wipers in my brain.” Ingrid E.

The Secret to a Good Night’s Sleep

January 9, 2021

The Secret to a Good Night’s Sleep. CBD vs Melatonin

For anyone who has struggled with getting to sleep or staying asleep, you have undoubtedly tried everything and possibly not have found anything that really works.

Melatonin seems harmless, but is it?

Because melatonin is a natural substance produced by the body to regulate sleep, most people think it has no downside. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland to help bring on sleep.  Melatonin is the most widely-used sleep aid. It is used by 86% of adults who use over the counter products to help them sleep.

Long-term use is not recommended

Melatonin can be helpful for occasional problems with sleep. However, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine finds there is no strong evidence for “the effectiveness or safety of melatonin for chronic insomnia.” Metanalyses of melatonin vs a placebo shows an almost insignificant benefit of 4-12 minutes improvement in the onset of sleep. Long term usage can alter hormone levels and sabotage sleep with potential side effects for children that could be even worse.

What you see is not always what you get

Melatonin supplements are not regulated by the FDA for effectiveness, safety or ingredients.  Over-the-counter melatonin has been banned in the UK, EU, Japan, Australia and Canada. Only the US has melatonin readily available over the counter. A review of 31 OTC melatonin supplements in Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine revealed that the melatonin content was between -83% to +478% compared to the label. High doses of melatonin can cause side effects, especially in those who take medications that interact with it and those with diabetes. In addition, the hormone serotonin was found in 26% of the samples. This can be potentially dangerous for people who are taking SSRIs which increase serotonin in the brain.  Too much serotonin can lead to serotonin syndrome which can cause shivering, diarrhea, fever and seizures.

There can be unwanted side effects and interactions

The most common side effects are headaches, dizziness, nausea and drowsiness during the day. Less common side effects could include mild depression and anxiety, confusion and disorientation and hypotension.

Melatonin can interfere with some important drugs for: diabetes, seizures, immune suppression and even some contraceptives.  It is also not considered safe to take melatonin with alcohol.

People with auto-immune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, dementia or restless leg syndrome should avoid melatonin. No studies have been conducted to determine if melatonin is safe if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

The secrets to a good night’s sleep:

1.  Stick to the same sleep routine. It’s recommended that you go to bed by 10 pm and get up by 6 am to be more in sync with the effect of darkness and light on your body.

2.  Avoid caffeine and other sleep inhibitors like alcohol, chocolate and soda.

3.  Stay off screens for an hour or two before you want to sleep.

4.  Keep your bedroom cool. Experts think between 60-65 degrees is ideal.

5.  Don’t watch anything too violent or stimulating right before bed.

6.  If you can’t sleep, don’t just toss and turn. That can ratchet up your anxiety. Get up and do something. Read until you’re sleepy or do something else relaxing.

To your health,
Pamela & Wendy

Black Box Warnings

Last year, the FDA ordered black box warnings for sleep aids (a.k.a sleeping pill) including, among others, Ambien, Sonata and Lunesta. The black box warnings resulted from an FDA review of 66 cases where the drugs created serious side-effects or death. There were cases where users exhibited unconscious behavior that resulted in falls, drownings, and car accidents to name a few. In about one third of cases, this unconscious behavior led to death. This latest warning is on top of earlier FDA warnings about cognitive impairment, next day fogginess and even elevated blood levels from taking a sleeping pill. [Source: Advisory Board]

The anxiety, stress and economic worry caused by the pandemic has had a profound effect on sleep. It is a “perfect storm of sleep problems,” according to Donn Posner, member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a founding member of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine. [Source: Harvard Gazette 4.16.20]

The consequences of sleep deprivation go way beyond constant fatigue, impaired memory and inability to focus. The unfortunate side-effects of too little sleep include an increased risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and Alzheimer’s. Insomnia also makes losing weight harder which is certainly not good news for any of us dealing with the Covid 15.

Get Your Sleep Back on Track

Most people have never heard of the endocannabinoid system [ECS] because it wasn’t discovered until the 90s and is still not taught in medical schools. It is believed the endocannabinoid system plays an important role in regulating our sleep cycle, specifically our circadian rhythms.

The ECS has receptors for cannabinoids such as CBD, CBN and CBG to help restore balance to the system and help you get our sleep back on track.

Good News

Because CBD alone is not always effective in helping you get to sleep, we’ve combined CBD with one of the newest cannabinoids, CBN, which has been shown to provide better sleep. It can help you sleep longer and get deeper sleep with no grogginess in the morning. It is without side effects and is non-intoxicating.

In addition, these two amazing cannabinoids, CBN and CBD, have a collective effect of relieving anxiety, reducing inflammation, being neuroprotective and alleviating pain– all qualities that reduce sleep problems and support good sleep patterns.

The most important thing to do for a good night’s sleep is to get the right kind of CBD. At Verdania Fields, all our CBD meets strict criteria. It’s called FLOW: Flower-derived, Lab tested, Organic and Whole Plant/Full Spectrum.

If you have any questions about our products, we offer a free consultation with a nurse whose focus is cannabis and CBD. Book an appointment by clicking here.

We believe the best healing comes from the earth. Natural, sustainably grown, non-GMO Verdania Fields. Don’t spend another sleepless night. (All our customers are glad they no longer do)

Not All CBD is Created Equal

Potent CBD - Not All CBD is Created Equal Verdania Fields CBD

There’s a lot of confusion about how to choose the purest and most effective/potent CBD.

When Wendy and I started to investigate CBD, we were pretty skeptical and a little nervous about trying it. We found a lot of conflicting information and weren’t even sure who to trust. It was not until we found Janna Champagne, a clinician and medical expert, that we found the answers we were looking for.

That’s why our mission is to give women the information they need to take control of their health and wellness and take the guesswork out of finding the right CBD.

1. Flower Power
The flower is the source of the purest, most potent CBD. Just the flower. No stalks, stems or leaves. Look for products that concentrate the cannabis flower without altering the contents. It’s the best option for people whose goal is improved health. This is called a whole/full spectrum formulation. Cannabis is a very complex plant, containing over 165 cannabinoids, 200 terpenes, bioflavonoids, chlorophyll, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. All these ingredients play an important role in maintaining health.

2. The Extraction Method Makes a Big Difference
It’s not enough to just know where the CBD comes from. You need to know how it’s processed. Some extraction methods compromise healing by eliminating beneficial compounds and others leave toxic solvents behind.

CO2 extraction is a new, popular method that can affect the quality of the final product. Because plant compounds are isolated then reconstituted, valuable compounds are lost. It is important to preserve all the compounds to maximize the therapeutic effect, a process known as the “Entourage Effect.” While CO2 products are marketed as “full spectrum,” they often contain only a fraction of the spectrum–usually about a dozen compounds–compared to products with the full complement of 500+ compounds.

Research has shown ethanol extraction is a preferred method to keep the vast majority of these ingredients intact to provide optimal health benefits.

3. Flower vs Industrial Hemp
Most CBD on the market is made from industrial hemp because it is less expensive. Industrial hemp is sparse in flower and often includes stalks, stems, and leaves which offer little to no potency and less spectrum.    In addition, industrial hemp is a bio-accumulator which means it cleans soil and retains toxins so where it is sourced is very important.

4. Third Party Testing
The is no legal requirement to test CBD but you should always look for companies that test their product to ensure the product is pure, potent and free of any contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals or mold.

5. Organic
This may seem obvious but for those who are looking to improve their health, toxic exposure may be harmful and could potentially negate any benefit received from CBD.

6. Don’t Judge CBD by Milligrams Alone.
Many people think more milligrams mean better quality and more potency. It’s a common mistake. You can find products up to 3000 milligrams at a significantly higher prices. But there is a catch. Research proves that whole plant formulation is 4x more potent. Whole plant products are effective at 20-25% of the dose of isolate or CO2 extraction. That means with a 300-milligram whole plant product, you’re getting the equivalent potency of a 1200 milligrams of a lesser product.

7. You’re Skeptical. You’ve tried CBD before. It hasn’t worked.
It’s probably because you didn’t have the right kind of CBD. Research has shown that isolate and CO2 extractions result in a bell curve response. This is why some products work initially and then stop working despite increased dosages.

Pamela & Wendy
